My name is Gavin Humphrey Martindale and I was born on September 11th, 1995 in Tulsa Oklahoma. I’m an only child if you don’t consider my half brother and sister who are way older than me. Although it was just me growing up with my mom (Kim) and dad (Gary), my family always had at least one dog in the house and currently we have two named Penny and Buddy. They are both mutts which we adopted and I couldn’t love more. I currently study at the University of Oklahoma and I’m just trying to finish up my senior year as smoothly as possible being that I graduate this Spring. My goals for the future are to graduate with a Biology major and hopefully move on to a dentist school. I would love to be accepted into the University of Oklahoma’s dentistry school and eventually one day start a dentist practice of my own. In this practice I hopefully will have specialized and can perform surgery because I think that would keep me entertained the most while helping people too.

My interests are involved with physical activities such as football, basketball, baseball, and weight lifting along with visual and auditory arts such as movies and music. My favorite movies are suspenseful movies such as “Prisoners” and comedies which could honestly be narrowed down to anything with Will Ferrell in it. My music choice however is all over the place. I love artists like Eminem, Kurt Cobain, Johnny Cash, Kendrick Lamar, David Allen Coe, and many more. My favorite thing to do is go to a concert which is talked about in my other blog Cain's Ballroom...My Favorite Place. The most recent concert I went to was actually a music festival called Voodoo in New Orleans. Here I got to see Kendrick Lamar, The Foo Fighters, The Killers, and many many more. I would say that my favorite food is Pizza but honestly I like anything except most dishes with veggies. I know this is childish but I just can’t get over them….I’ve never truly eaten a salad as fat as that makes me sound.
I took this May 2017 at a concert in OKC and I think it might be one of the best picture's I've taken of an artist (Lil Wayne). |
Although I have a vast amount of love for the state I was raised in, I want to move to another city preferably larger one day. I would say this is my ultimate goal because I don’t want to say I never truly got out and experienced the world. If you have any questions about me feel free to comment!!
It's always fun to get to come back around and meet students a second time, Gavin: I remembered about your plans to be a dentist, but until I saw Cain's again and read your Introduction, I had forgotten about how music is such an important part of your life. Music is a huge theme in the epic tradition (even the gods are musicians!), so keep an eye out for that when you start reading the epics. Plus, you can find all kinds of amazing Indian music online; check out this Storybook from last semester which has music to go with the stories; you might have seen that visiting the India class but just in case you did not catch this one, I bet you will like it: Devis of the Vedic Age (she used several videos from Bickram Ghosh who is one of my personal favorites!)
ReplyDeleteGavin, your career goals of becoming a dentist are very admirable. I am in the process of applying for PA school, and I know that medical graduate programs are no easy task, so kudos to you! It is cool that you already have an idea of how you want to specialize in dental surgery. Best of luck!
ReplyDeleteGavin, I was at that Lil Wayne concert too! I had a great time and hope you did as well. That picture is so clear and crisp. You're a much better photographer than I am, I always end up taking the worst pictures at concerts. I also like the Killers and am so jealous you got to go to Voodoo
ReplyDeleteGavin, I'm also in Bio major but my focus is Physical Therapy! I know being a dentist can be time consuming and difficult but I know we both can survive OU!
ReplyDeleteHi Gavin, I used to have a dog named Penny growing up she was a corgi! It seems like you have big goals ahead for you especially one day starting your own dentist practice. And I'm so jealous that you went to the Voodoo concert I heard so many good things about it! Good luck in your last semester as an undergrad!
ReplyDeleteWhat's up Gavin? I hope your semester is going good so far and that all your classes don't keep you too busy. Once you get your practice up and going hit me up because I'd definitely be a client haha. Anyways, hope this class is a good stress relief for you like it is for me.
ReplyDeleteHello Gavin. My name is Jonathan Witt. Becoming a dentist seems like a great goal and I hope you accomplish it. I hope you are able to get into the University of Oklahoma’s dentistry school. I too enjoy a good comedy with Will Ferrell. Talladega Nights is probably my favorite movie with him in it. Also, salads are great you just need more bacon.
ReplyDeleteHey Gavin, I like where you going with the dentist goal because when I was little kid I wanted to become dentist too. Then reality hit me that I am not cut out to become dentist so from then on I changed my major to what my specialty is and it business, my major is called MIS. You could say business runs in the family, my grandpa did business and so did my dad. Good luck becoming dentist.
ReplyDeleteHi Gavin! Congrats in advance! I bet you'll make a great dentist. My cousin is one and he loves it! That's so cool that you got to go to the music festival in New Orleans I bet it was tons of fun! I'm an Eminem and Kendrick Lamar fan myself. They're great rappers. I enjoy comedies and movies full of suspense as well, there's never a boring moment. I actually laughed most of the time when I saw the movie IT at Meacham but that might also be because the guy behind me kept making funny comments. Anyways, I hope you have a great semester and good luck!
ReplyDeleteGavin, I just read your story for this week, and like how you incorporated your own dogs into the story. That is a rally cool way to utilize familiar characters within your own life, and write a story about them. I enjoy reading about other people's favorite types of music, I also enjoy all of the artist's that you posted about. I was actually a microbiology major at one point during my college career, but the physics, and organic chemistry portions really kicked my butt! Best of luck to you, and I hope you get into OU's Dental school!
ReplyDeleteHey Gavin, Congratulation on this being your last semester for your undergraduate. I am also in my last semester of classes at OU just trying to make it through. I do not have very firm plans for the future but it seems like you already know where you want your future to head. Good luck getting into dentistry school. I do not know if I would be able to handle sticking my hands in people's mouths. I work with kids so I would be scared of getting bitten all of the time. Good luck on your final semester!
ReplyDeleteHi Gavin. What made you want to become a dentist? I don't know anyone going to dentistry school so I've never had anyone to ask! My girlfriend despises him but I'ma big Will Ferrel fan too. Taladega Nights will always hold a fond place on my heart. What is your favorite Will Ferrel movie? Also, congratulations on almost graduating!
ReplyDeleteGavin, I had a slight chuckle when you narrowed your comedy movies down to "anything with Will Ferrel in it" because that is such a wide range in itself. How many people are instantly afraid of you when they here you want to be a dentist, and how do you re-assure them you're not just out to cause them pain and tell them to floss?
ReplyDeleteHey Gavin!
ReplyDeleteThat is so exciting that you are graduating soon! I truly hope you get in OUCOD, that is my dream too! Could not agree more that it surgeries sure would be fun to add into the mix instead of just fillings, general check ups, and cleanings. I am a health nut, but still love my pizza just as much! Good luck on your journey!
Gavin, congrats on graduating soon! I'm not from Tulsa but I've been to a show at Cain's Ballroom and it's awesome, I also love the Foo Fighters too! I really want to live in a different city or state that I'm not from too, it gives us a chance to experience more. I loved getting to read your introduction, good luck on graduating and dental school!
ReplyDeleteHey Gavin,
ReplyDeleteI've met very few people who want to be a dentist, what was it that first interested you in that profession? I hope you are able to get accepted into the school and that everything goes well for you.
Hi Gavin! It's awesome to see you want to be dentist, my sister is actually in her final year of Dental School and she really loves what she does. I have never been to Cain's before, but I have always wanted to go. Congratulations on graduating in May.
ReplyDeleteHey Gavin! I think it is really cool that you want to be a dentist. When I was a kid I hated going to the dentist, but I think most kids have that feeling towards the dentist. I haven't been to a concert at Cain's yet, but there are plenty of bands that I listen to that end up playing shows there. Good luck getting into dental school!
ReplyDeleteHello there, Gavin! It awesome that you want to be a dentist I had that dream to but It broke as soon as I came to college and I had to pick what I am good as business and now my major is MIS. I haven’t been to any concert not just Cain’s so I would like to go sometime and see what it like to go to concert and good luck with dentist major.
ReplyDeleteNice to meet you Gavin!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on almost being done with your undergrad here at the O of U! Good luck on your future endeavors of dentistry school. I would be a dentist, but I just do not have the smile for it. Music is also a big part of my life and I hopefully some day make it to Voodoo.
Hello Gavin!
ReplyDeleteWow, that's awesome how this is your final semester of undergrad. A bunch of my friends are pursuing the pre-dental track so I somewhat know how competitive it can be. Congrats on achieving your goals. I am vegetarian so that's really funny how you don't like veggie dishes. Good luck with the rest of the semester!
Hey Gavin I really like the picture of the giant tooth in your introduction! It reminds me of the Fair Odd Parents episode with Chip Skylark singing the song "Shiny Teeth, Shiny Teeth." Anyways, It's cool that you want to be a dentist and I really appreciate people who want to go into that field! It is definitely something that people need and it is a great service! I look forwarad to reading some of your stories! Thanks for sharing your life.
ReplyDeleteHi Gavin! Your introduction picture drew me in! I am obsessed with teeth, especially keeping my own teeth clean so I have great appreciation for dentistry! I am not going to be a dentist but good luck to you on pursuing your dreams! I am going to be a nurse practitioner, and hopefully my plan stays on track! I am happy that you shared your life with us and I cannot wait to read your stories!
ReplyDeleteHey Gavin! It is great to meet you! It is awesome to meet another person who loves going to concerts. I go to Cain's all of the time (even if that means to roadtrip to Tulsa every weekend haha). I prefer it to Diamond Ballroom. It is also good to hear that you know what you are wanting as a career. I wish you well!
ReplyDeleteHi Gavin! I have to agree that Cain's ballroom is a pretty cool place. I have only been once, it was a Chase Rice concert, but I absolutely love the atmosphere. I am really hoping to go again. I definitely understand what you mean by being all over the place with your taste in music. Great post and good luck with the rest of the semester and dental school!
ReplyDeleteHi Gavin,
ReplyDeleteCongrats on about to graduate, I am also about to graduate this May. I love the Cain's Ballroom. I have been there for a few concerts. Tulsa is an awesome town. I am about to move back there. I too love pizza but I don't mind the salad part. Good luck with the rest of your semester.
Hey Gavin! Eeeeesh. I hate going to the dentist. It freaks my out to have someone poking around in my mouth and the sound of drills gives me shivers! I do love the free toothbrush, though. ;)
ReplyDeleteI’m from Tulsa too! Moved to Oklahoma City about four years ago. The two places are very different, aren’t they?
If you want to move to a larger city and you love music, I’d recommend Austin. Tons of great music and food, a bigger city that still feels pretty accessible and it’s close to home for holidays.
Good luck!
Hey there, Gavin!
ReplyDeleteI think I commented on your intro last semester in Myth Folklore! It is cool to see that we have the same career aspirations. I wish you the best during your application process. Your music taste is really interesting. I also enjoy all of the sports that you mentioned. I wish you the best moving forward. Keep up the good work!
Hi Gavin!
ReplyDeleteI hope your semester is going as smoothly as you want it to! I am also graduating in May, and I can not wait. I am sure by this point you have heard about dental school, so I really hope you got in to OU or another great school! You have a really diverse taste in music! I also love pizza and hate veggies.
Hey, Gavin, congratulations on graduating soon! Also, I hope you get accepted to dentistry school! I've heard of the music festival in New Orleans before and I've always wanted to go. I'm not normally the music fest type but the line-up for Voodoo is always awesome and I love New Orleans. Good luck with the last couple weeks of the semester!
