I found this image on the Growth Mindset Meme page. I found it fitting because challenge should be something I look forward to. |

Growth Mindset: Bettering Myself
I first hear of Carol Dweck and the Growth Mindset idea last semester in the Mythology and Folklore class. I personally think the idea is a great thing to work towards and will promote people to be better individuals as well as more confident in themselves. However, I feel that our society as a whole focuses too much on making sure people get nothing but good grades at a certain time rather than working towards advancement. I blame this on school systems focusing too much on testing and grades. I wish the "Not Yet" principle was used at a younger age because I remember from an early age being expected by everyone to get nothing but A's in school whether I truly learned something or not. I think that this has carried on today in my life in the sense that I'm not always concerned about truly learning something but rather just being able to perform well for a grade. I need to focus on this matter more and be able to accept that learning the information is more important than memorizing it for a short period of time. I agree with Carol in the sense that I shouldn't be satisfied with something being "easy", and I will try to push myself beyond this but to always try to keep going with my learning to the point that I have to have questions for others about the things I'm learning. As I'm excited to dive deeper into the Growth Mindset style of thinking this semester, I want to focus myself on trying not to just be able to satisfy the criteria of my classes but rather satisfy myself in truly learning material. I think that the best way I can do this is by learning material for my dental test that I'm preparing for.

I am glad you are finding it useful, Gavin! Growth mindset is really about beliefs and habits... which means it is all about taking the time to develop those new habits and practice new ways of thinking. If you can use this semester to keep on with that kind of practice, that will be great! Plus, I keep finding new videos and articles to share, so there will be new things to learn if you want to do some of the challenges later on. Last week I put the Shakira video from Zootopia into the growth mindset playlist because I thought it was so cute AND very much about mindset: Shakira - Try Everything. :-)
